General information

Brief description of organisation
Morgans Skip A/S is a not-for-profit community-run organisation in Gratangen fjord. Since 2008 it has managed the wooden sculpture of the same name by the late Swedish artist Calle Örnemark. Overlooking the sculpture is an open-plan community venue called Captain’s Cabin, which is sometimes used for guest accommodation, sometimes a café, and since May 2019, an artist residency for two periods per year.

Brief description of residency program
Morgans Skip offers a community-based AiR opportunity, situated next to a life-sized sculpture of a sailing ship’s masts protruding from the rocky shore of a magnificent fjord in the Norwegian arctic. Just as the sculpture helped revitalise the local area in 2008, we’re looking for artists (see disciplines below) whose work can extend this legacy, contributing something to the local community, or perhaps even involving them. The residency is future-facing, with an overarching emphasis on building sustainable, resilient communities even as the Arctic undergoes great change.

Application process
In an email, please indicate which period you’re applying for and attach in the same email (if possible, as a single PDF document):

  • your contact details;
  • your website or artist portfolio AND a short CV.
  • 3-5 examples of your work to give us a sense of your practice (may be web links, or embedded in the PDF);
  • a statement (maximum one page) outlining why you are interested, what you have done in the past, and (in general terms) what you might hope to do, or the ideas you’d like to engage with in your Residency.

Presentation of artists’ work

  • We encourage artists who are happy to be involved in community-based practice (even if it’s just a workshop), or are keen to produce work that enters a dialogue with the place, the sculpture and with locals.
  • Exhibitions or presentations are able to be arranged, either in the Captain’s Cabin studio or elsewhere in the Kommune.  We can help you with venues, contacting schools, the old people’s home, other artists, etc. as you require.  Captain’s Cabin comes with all the equipment needed to host a café or perhaps even pub event if you wish; again we would assist you with this.

Description of residency

Lifts with villagers (to shop, bus stop) may be arranged.
